Relaxation on Bora Bora

Relaxing on Moorea
Chilling out in a hammock on Moorea is a great way to spend half the day!

Let's face it. The Tahitian islands are all about relaxation. The Polynesian lifestyle assures that.

With the exception of just a few sports activities, people in Tahiti Polynesia just aren't in a hurry, no matter what they're doing!

Moorea Island
definately suit this classic, laid-back attitude.

Sun drenched tropical beaches and their accompanying heat cry out for sun worshippers by day, and recuperation from that heat and sun in the evenings.

A great place to get away from the stresses of life, Moorea is your personal relaxation oasis. Breathe in deeply the South Pacific air as you gently sway in your hammock. Read a book. Sample the polynesian cuisine choices of the island's restaurants.

Perhaps you'll want to take a tour of some of the local sights? In the evening, if you still have energy, have a Maitai at the Kaveka Restaurant and Lounge, or just take a moonlight walk.

This page is here to help plant the seeds of RELAXATION in your vacation and perhaps assist you in choosing or pre-planning a specific activity on Moorea island.

MOTU HANGOUTS/ PICNICS

Relaxing on a motu is one of the most wonderful things you can do in French Polynesia. The island of Moorea has 2 motus that you can enjoy. The larger one is called Motu Fareone and the smaller one Motu Tiahura. They are both beautiful little islets with white sandy beaches and are located on the Northwestern part of the island, within the lagoon, near the Club Med and Le Petit shopping center.

One of the favorite things to do on these Motus is have a picnic. A few companies specialize in arranging these. A typical motu picnic will consist of local fruits and juices, bread, and polynesian lunch style foods such as fish, rice, chicken, or other gourmet items. The menu will depend on your host.

Usually, these motu picnics are combined on a lagoon excursion or circle island tour of some kind, and will last anywhere from 1-4 hours, but 1/2 day or even full day motu hangouts are available on your request.

Here is a list of qualified tour operators that can arrange a motu picnic for you:

CIRCLE ISLAND TOURS
One relaxing and interesting way to see and learn about the island of Moorea is to take one of several roadside tours. Options include various bus and mini vans, and also "Le Petit Train", (actually a truck that looks like a train- see photo).

Most of these tours will circle the island at a leisurely pace (both 1/2 and full days), stopping at all the most popular sightseeing spots. There is always a knowledgeable guide describing the details and history of what you are seeing: ancient maraes and other cultural sights, vanilla and pearl farms, etc.

This is a great, relaxing way to spend a few hours and get an appreciation and overview of the island.

SUNSET CRUISES

Enjoying a sunset cruise of Moorea's lagoon is definately a relaxing and enjoyable activity in French Polynesia. This is what Moorea is all about... enjoying the peace and tranquility of the South Pacific from the water...

Typically, sunset cruises depart for the lagoon around 4:00 or so, in plenty of time to enjoy the spectacular colors of the setting sun. You'll sail or cruise around as you sip Tahitian cocktails and learn about the history and facts of the Tahitian islands, and in particular Moorea.

2 or 3 hours later, you'll be back in your hotel room with a wonderful memory of Polynesia.

Here's a company that gives lovely sunset cruises on Moorea:

NIGHTLIFE & ENTERTAINMENT

Like all other islands in French Polynesia except Tahiti, (which has Papeete), nightlife on Moorea isn't exactly earth shaking. In fact, it's pretty slow... With the exception of the Tiki theatre, (which is exceptional), and the Club Med, (who's entertainment style doesn't always suit everybody's taste), there really aren't many places to dance, party, or stay out late. In fact, evening entertainment pretty much consists of late night dinners, having a few drinks after 9:00 pm, or the occasional local band playing at Alfredos restaurant or one of the larger hotels.

As for dating, we recommend bringing your own honey. Much to the dismay of many a traveler, there isn't much of a singles scene on Moorea either.
Daytime entertainment is also limited to only a few restaurants participating in anything closely resembling a "happy hour".

Current signs all point to a livelier nightscene and more active social life in Moorea's future, but will probably take a few years to happen... Some people complain about this while others realize it's just the way the island is- proof of the undeniable fact that even though it's one of the more touristed islands in all of French Polynesia, it's still fairly UNdeveloped. In the meantime, they say, enjoy the laid back peace of the island for what it is now.

If you must explore the "entertainment factor", here's a few interesting ideas:
