SNORKELING
Snorkeling
is quite possibly the overall favorite activity of all visitors arriving to
any island of French Polynesia.
This activity is not only relaxing, but also exciting at the same time! Just
about every place you can dive, you can also snorkel, but without the burden
of scuba equipment. Its a wonderful feeling of freedom.
Moorea's lagoon is excellent
for snorkeling because of the amazing combination of clear visibility and generally
calm conditions. The water is crystal clear and warm. The marine life is abundant
and interesting. Simply put, this island is a snorkeler's dream.
Many of the hotels and pensions can furnish
you with basic snorkeling gear to explore the beach right out your front door, but if you want to make a day of it, try one of these companies for a snorkeling tour or excurion that you'll never forget:

Perhaps
the easiest watersport for everyone to enjoy, both young and old, is swimming
in the lagoon around Moorea! It's protected waters have hardly any waves and
practically no tides to deal with, making for calm and flat waters the majority
of the time. With an average temperature between 80-85 degrees fahrenheit,
the swimming is simply wonderful! If you're into just basking about in the
shallows, its comfortable and cooling in the day. Watch out for getting sunburned
if you stay in for too long with no skin protection!
For those of you interesting in getting exercise
swimming, then our suggestion is to bring along a pair of swimming goggles
or a scuba mask, so you can see where you're going as you swim your desired
distance along the shoreline. In many places of the lagoon, you'll need to
avoid the coral when swimming close to shore. Obviously, combining swimming
with snorkeling is another way of enjoying this activity.
See our SNORKELING
SECTION ABOVE FOR DETAILS.
KITESURFING (FLYSURFING)
The most radical new sport
to hit French Polynesia in the past 50 years has to be kiteboarding. The
french call it Flysurfing. It basically involves being pulled on a board
similiar to a surfboard with straps, by a powerful kite. Riders must master
the wind and various techniques of boardriding as they combine the two for incredibly
fast and intense rides. Huge air is possible...
Although most of the kiteboarding in French Polynesia is done on Tahiti and Bora Bora, there are more and more riders getting into the sport on Moorea too.
Check out more details for kiteboarding on Moorea on our (work in progress) KiteTahiti website.
If you already are into kiteboarding and know
what's up, definately bring your board and kites to Moorea! The winds
here are excellent and dependable and there's more than one good spot to
go out from shore. Small surf and uncrowded conditions are the norm. Unless you're a real pro, you'll be staying within the lagoon.
Although there is no Kitesurfing school or place to rent kites or equipment on Moorea, it's possible for beginners to get the feel for the sport by talking to the locals.
